Special Olympics offers year-round sports training and athletic competition in 7 Olympic-type winter sports to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. These are the Official Special Olympics Winter Sports Rules. These Sports Rules provide the standards for Special Olympics competitions that will be held locally, nationally, and worldwide.
The Official Special Olympics Winter Sports Rules is the result of recommendations and the practical experiences of thousands of coaches, volunteers, Special Olympics athletes and their families worldwide. Attention has been given to modifications in the sports rules to insure for the widest range of abilities and that each athlete has a reasonable chance to win.
These Rules provide the necessary steps for Games organizers to follow to insure that each athlete is placed in the appropriate ability group. They also provide the guidelines for coaches to follow in preparing their athletes for competition.
