Directions

To Boston University:
From the West
Take the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) to Exit 18 (Cambridge/Brighton). Pay toll, then follow the signs for Cambridge through the first light. Turn right at the next light, keeping the Doubletree Guest Suite Hotel on the right. Take Soldiers Field Road/Storrow Drive to the Kenmore Square exit. Turn right at the light at the end of the exit ramp. Stay to the right to remain on Bay State Road.
From the North
Travel South on Route 95 to Route 93. Take Exit 26 (Storrow Drive/North Station) moving quickly to the left on the exit ramp, and into the tunnel to Storrow Drive to the Kenmore Square Exit (left exit). Use the right-hand side of the exit ramp for Kenmore Square (see directions above from Kenmore square exit).
From the South
Take Route 93/Route 3 North to Exit 26 (Storrow Drive/Back Bay). Go West on Storrow Drive; follow directions above to the Kenmore Square exit and the University
To Boston University via Public Transportation:
Via the Green Line: B line Train
Via the Bus: 8, 57, 60, 65, 8A to Kenmore Square station, Transfer to a B line train
To Harvard University Athletic Complex:
From the West
Take the Massachusetts Turnpike east to Exit 18 (Allston/Cambridge). After paying toll, bear left at fork towards Allston. Turn right at second set of lights onto North Harvard Street. Proceed approximately one mile.
From the North
Take I-93 south to Storrow Drive exit. Take Storrow Drive west for approximately five miles. Exit at Harvard Square/North Harvard Street. At top of exit, turn left onto North Harvard Street.
From the South
Take I-95 north to I-93 north. Follow I-93 until Exit 20 (Massachusetts Turnpike). Take Mass. Pike west to Exit 20 (Allston/Cambridge). After paying toll, bear left at fork towards Allston. Turn right at second set of lights onto North Harvard Street. Proceed approximately one mile.
To Harvard via Public Transportation:
Via Train: Red Line to Harvard Square. 10-minute walk from the square, down JFK St. and over the Charles River
Via Bus: 66 and 86 routes stop at Harvard Stadium

Opening Ceremony
Friday, June 18th
The Opening Ceremony for the 2010 Summer Games will take place at the Boston University Indoor Track and Tennis Center 100 Ashford Street, beginning at 7:30 pm. The ceremony will feature live entertainment from the band Secret Service, Dave Kartunen, as well as the Law Enforcement Torch Run which will carry in the flame of hope and light the caldron to officially kick off the game.
Pre-Entertainment will be held on the BU Softball Diamond across the street from 5:30 -7:00 pm. The event will feature special performances by The Dance Inn in Lexington as well as a Special Olympics Cheerleading Team.
Olympic Town
Saturday, June 19th from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Sunday, June 20th from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
There will be a wide array of games, interactive exhibits including Frisbee Golf, Museum of Science, Radio Disney, Curious Creatures, karaoke and live music. Musical guests will include Close Friends and X-Band as well as yoga instruction, and the Police K-9 Unit.
Healthy Athletes
Saturday, June 19th, SOMA’s Healthy Athletes Program is proud to offer free health screenings in hearing (Healthy Hearing), podiatry (Fit Feet), dentistry (Special Smiles, and vision (Opening Eyes). The screenings will open at 10:30am.
Healthy Athlete screenings are a great way to utilize any free time teams or athletes may have Saturday. Most of the screenings will take place in tents in Olympic Town, although the Hearing Screening will be indoors at the Blue Line Lounge in Bright Arena. All of the screenings are non-invasive, fun and aimed at helping athletes become healthier and better at their sport! All are welcome to enjoy fun, interactive health screenings designed specifically for Special Olympics athletes. Contact Stephanie Savarese for more details.
Athlete Input Council
SOMA will be inviting each local program to invite one athlete to attend the athlete input. This is an opportunity for athletes to give SOMA their feedback on their experiences at Summer Games. Athletes will be able to take their dinner to BU’s Rich Hall; they will then be escorted back to the dance and to their team/program. Dance This year's dance will again held at the Boston University Indoor Track and Tennis Center (same location as Opening Ceremony) from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. This year’s dance will also be a Street Fair. There will be a variety of carnival games and prizes to be had on Ashford Street prior to and during the dance. The street fair will be open during dinner and run until 8:00 pm.
Movie
For those athletes who do not wish to attend the dance a movie will be shown in the BU Cinema room, in Rich Hall from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Movie: the feature presentation will be Wall-E. Law Enforcement Cruiser Convoy and Car Show
Saturday, June 19th at 11:00 am. At least one vehicle from many Massachusetts communities will converge on the Harvard Rugby fields on the Saturday of Summer Games. At the finish, the largest law enforcement vehicle car show in Massachusetts will take place and athletes will be able to mingle with Law Enforcement and check out all the different types of Law Enforcement vehicles in Massachusetts.

Lunch menu: hamburgers, hot dogs, preztels, granola bar, fruit packets **If you or your athletes have specific dietary needs or do not like the choices provided, please make arrangements to bring your own lunch or dinner. Meals will be made available to credentialed athletes, Unified Partners and coaches FIRST!! After athletes, Unified Partners, and coaches have eaten lunches will be made available to volunteers and for sale to family members. Families can purchase dinner for $10. Please pre-register. Friday night a mandatory track coaches meeting will be held on the softball field where the Pre-entertainment takes place at 7:45pm. The track schedule and staging procedures will be reviewed and a detailed order of events with races heats will be distributed.
Click here for a detailed track program. Coaches will also receive an e-mail with a track program with handbook. The program will detail which tents event will be staged from and a map of the Webster field and McGurdy track.
For those Athletes that throw the softball over 30m. They will be asked to train and compete in a new field event.

Volunteer Information

Online volunteer registration is now closed. We still need volunteers on Sunday, June 20th, and you may register on-site; volunteer registration opens at Harvard University Athletic Facilities at 6:30 am and will continue until 12:00 pm. The public is also welcome to come and attend Opening Ceremony at Boston University’s Indoor Track and Tennis Facility on Friday from 7:30 – 9:30 pm, as well as cheer on our athletes at Harvard on Saturday. |
