Ward Construction Reels in Support for Special Olympics MA at the 8th Annual Charter Cup Fishing Tournament

July 22, 2024

Fundraising for Special Olympics Massachusetts is not limited to standard approaches or one-size-fits-all categories. Instead, it encourages community members to creatively combine their passions and hobbies to support the mission of inclusion. For Katie and Erik Ward of Ward Construction, the Charter Cup Fishing Tournament isn’t just about reeling in big catches—it’s about growing support for a cause close to their hearts, Special Olympics Massachusetts.

This year marked the 8th Annual Charter Cup Fishing Tournament, held on July 10th at Baxter’s Boathouse Club, where businesses and individuals within the construction industry gathered to support charitable causes. The tournament, organized by E.J. Jaxtimer, a prominent builder in the Cape Cod area, recruited dedicated participants such as Ward Construction. Behind the scenes, Katie and Erik co-manage the company, with Katie applying her background in business management to ensure smooth operations and a strong commitment to community involvement and charitable work.

The Charter Cup Fishing Tournament consists of between 15 and 20 industry teams, each raising funds for various local nonprofits, with 100% of all proceeds donated. After considering various charities, Katie chose to support Special Olympics Massachusetts, a decision she described as straightforward.

"There's nothing like the feeling of putting on that jersey and competing with your team," Katie said. "So, if we can help allow people to have those experiences without the financial burden of it, it's amazing."

Sports have profoundly shaped both Katie and Erik’s understanding of business, relationships, coaching, and leadership, motivating them to contribute to the Special Olympics Massachusetts community. According to Katie, raising funds for Special Olympics athletes was exactly what they wanted to do, and they wanted to help in any way possible. Their dedication paid off as Ward Construction proudly raised $21,000, including a $1,000 bonus for catching the tournament’s largest bass.

Looking ahead, Sarah and Erik Ward are enthusiastic about continuing their support for Special Olympics Massachusetts. Katie expressed deep gratitude to their community for rallying behind the Special Olympics movement, emphasizing the significant impact of every donation, regardless of how big or small.

“There were a lot of people in our community that also stepped up and saw the value in what Special Olympics Massachusetts is doing,” she said. “I just want to thank everybody who donated.”

According to Katie, supporting Special Olympics Massachusetts means providing everyone the opportunity to be an athlete, experience pride, and build camaraderie. Companies like Ward Construction and fundraisers such as the one hosted by E.J. Jaxtimer help create opportunities for athletes, enrich lives, and foster inclusivity.

For the Wards and countless others, the Charter Cup Fishing Tournament isn’t just a day of fishing; it’s a celebration of inclusivity and generosity. Through their passion for building, fishing, and commitment to community, Katie and Erik exemplify how ordinary hobbies can make an extraordinary impact—building not just homes, but also a more inclusive community for all.
