Justin’s Journey: How one Facebook message changed the course of his life

October 10, 2024

Who knew a single message could change the course of a life? For Justin Secher, a note from a friend with intellectual disabilities opened the door to a transformative journey through Special Olympics MA. What began as a one-time favor blossomed into a fulfilling career and a deep commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

It all started with a message on Facebook. Justin recalls, “I was friendly with an individual who had messaged me on Facebook saying they needed Unified Partners.” At first, he didn’t know much about Unified Sports or what it meant to be a partner, but his friend’s request ignited something within him.

At the time, Justin was working at a bank, and taking the leap to join the Mid Cape Sports program as a Unified Partner for basketball quickly became a passion. Basketball was his favorite sport, and this opportunity opened his eyes to a world he had never fully understood.

“It was just a great experience from the get-go,” he said, commenting on how rewarding it was to connect with athletes and share in their accomplishments and challenges.

What started as a weekend volunteer gig soon transformed into a life-altering career path. Justin became the director of admissions at LIFE Cape Cod (Living Independently Forever), where he also focuses on fitness and casework. Through his involvement with Special Olympics, he found not just a job but a calling—a way to dedicate his life to helping others and advocating for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

On top of the Monday-to-Friday grind, Justin spends his weekends coaching and mentoring. Picture this: a cold, rainy Saturday morning spent coaching soccer, followed by a drive across the state to be a Unified Partner for flag football.

“It was a long day... but when people rely on you to get it done, it’s so worth it,” he said.

His dedication to athletes is unwavering. Not only do they rely on him, but he also understands the impact of his presence on their lives. “There’s no hesitation; you do whatever it takes to get it done,” he affirmed, emphasizing the appreciation he receives from the athletes and their families.

The beauty of Justin's journey lies not just in personal fulfillment but in how it inspires others. “I think a lot of people in life are looking for a purpose... Special Olympics will do that for you,” he said.

Justin believes that anyone, regardless of their background, can find a place at Special Olympics Massachusetts. “When you’re on the same playing field, you’re equal, and there is no disability. You’re playing the same sport for the same cause, and I think that’s what really makes it like a brotherhood or a sisterhood,” he said.

Over the years, Justin has witnessed countless transformative moments. “Just seeing the progress... it gets [athletes] out of the house and off the couch,” he said. “It’s just cool to see the development socially from these things as well, not just on the field, but the off-the-field camaraderie.”

Justin remains hopeful for the next generation of athletes and volunteers due to the friendships formed throughout his own journey that have left a lasting impression on his life. He knows that the bond created through Unified Sports transcends disability, fostering a community built on shared experiences and mutual respect.

“Just get involved," he said. "It’s one of the most fulfilling things."
